    G’day guys, welcome back to BMTroubleU. Recently we did a part on resetting E53 service lights. I thought I’d get you in underneath the car today and check out a few other things ive found with this particular car. This is the gearbox, ive had the pan off obviously. You can see all the mechatronic bits and bobs in there. Now the reason ive got the pan off is because a reoccuring theme amongst all these mechatronic gearboxes- that includes E90′s, 1 series, 5 series, a whole lot in the BMW range, is the plug sleeve seal up here (0:36) alright, that always leaks (very regularly leaks ok). So ive got it out today. Now the reason ive got the pan off is to get that out the white tab here, usually in this same area on alll gearboxes, just gotta pull that down before you can take that plug sleeve seal out. Ive got the new one here (0:58). Youve gotta have that little locator down the bottom, thats on this model. Im pretty sure thats how it is on the other ones as well, just down the bottom there. Just make sure you note that when you get it out, make sure its down the bottom there. Its got a corresponding locator on the plug just here (1:20). If you can see that. Now a couple of other things while we’re under this E53 to look for on your car…just get my flathead. I always look at castor bushes on E53′s- always. They’re a heavy car and they like to fong out these castor bushes. These are the castor bushes (1:38). Youve got your tie-rods (1:41), your swaybars (1:43) and camber bushes (1:45), they never… hardly ever go. I’ve barely ever seen any of them bugger up, but these castor bushes…. these ones in particular are fine. If you can see that (1:57) thats fine, theres no splitting in that. Check up the top as well, I cant quite get my camera in there but check top and bottom. These ones are fine, but when they go you’ll get brake shudder, you will get a big noise…. especially say youre on a flat surface, just put it in drive, let the brake off and get it up to whatever top speed it is at idle and then just jab on the brakes. And as soon as you jab on the brakes you’ll hear the whole body just go BOOM and you’ll go ‘Oh, yea castor bushes’ no problems. No need to get underneath it (most times) order them straight up. You can order just these bushes and press them in with any press youve got in the workshop, or if youre a home fella you can take these out its not too hard… down the end here (2:41) you might need a separator tool, alright. Take the arm out, the complete arm and take it down to where ever they have a press and they’ll press them in for you. Other issues you get on these E53′s obviously cause its four wheel drive its got front CV shafts. CV boots pretty regularly, i mean we havent had many of them recently, but i have done quite a few of those E53 cv boots. Alright, finally i havent got the belly covering off but turbo oil (you can see a leak there (3:22), that might even be one there) from the charge hoses right through the front bumper here in the intercooler regularly go the seals in them. Ive been told they blow a bit of oil as per normal so dont about it worry too much. If you get bad leaks check your pcv obviously and your turbo seals, see if theyre blown or not.
